2022 Arts In Bloom

The Arts in Bloom exhibit is always a hightlight of the HCA's year! This year is no exception. Over 65 artists submitted artwork for consideration from 35 towns and 5 states. We received a wonderful variety of works from Experimental to Classical Realism and everything in between.

Out of 155 pieces, Juror Sorin Bica selected 40 for display in this year's exhibition. Six pieces were identified for an award and will be honored with fresh flower arrangements designed the Hopkinton Garden Club members that will be on display May 26th - May 29th.

The HCA Art In Bloom 2022 Exhibition will be available for viewing at the HCA's Lotvin Family gallery May 23 - June 15, 2022 as well as online here.
Opening Reception: May 26th at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts from 6 to 7:00pm.

About the Juror Sorin Bica:
Sorin Bica is a contemporary artist based in the Boston area, frequently sought for his unique large-scale abstract and figurative paintings. What inspired you to make this work?: Daffodils are hardy winter survivors and one of the first flowers to send their shoots toward the sun in March. They can symbolize a sense of awareness to new life and resilience. The first sighting of their cheery yellow trumpets gives me joy and hope that everything will be alright as the earth comes back to life. The other objects in the still life echo the daffodils’ energy and shapes of the stems and flowers, in a graphic play of pattern and light.

$2,800.00

Dimensions: 24 x 28 x 1.5
Medium: oil on canvas
Year created: 2020
What inspired you to make this work?: There is a letter noted by Bishop Eusebius (Ecclesiastical History) circa 340 AD on the death of St. Polycarp circa 150 AD. St Polycarp was burned at the stake for refsuing to renounce his faith in Christ. When his body refused to burn, he was thrust through by a sword. Tradition holds that a dove was seen arising from the smoke. I had read this account many years ago and recalled the scene when I was considering a name for this picture. Polycarp renounced his life in favor of his eternal values. He faced extreme suffering and even death rather than betray himself and his God.
